Overview
Central Middle School serves students in grades 7th and 8th grade in Oroville, CA. We are the first Healthy Behavior Learning Center in Butte County serving students in after school. We are in operation Monday through Friday, 2:30pm to 6:00pm, from August to May. Our student population is diverse and comprised of 25% Asian, 25% Caucasian, 20% Hispanic, 15% African American, 5% Native American and 10% from a wide variety of cultures. We welcome the opportunity to have agencies tour our Healthy Behaviors Learning Center in beautiful gold country. Our program has implemented several ongoing strategies that are increasing the healthy food/drink choices by our students, families, staff, school & community assessed through ongoing evaluations. Our staff strives to be positive role models through self-reflection, education & personal growth. Our ASP follows adopted policy guidelines & aligns with the school day.
Making a Difference
Through the step-by-step guide, “Changing Lives, Saving Lives” our program has implemented several on-going strategies that are increasing the healthy food/drink choices by our students, families, staff, school and community. These strategies are assessed through on-going evaluations. Our staff strives to be positive role models through self-reflection, education and personal growth. Our ASP follows adopted policy guidelines and aligns with the school day.

- Family Fun Wellness Events: Collaborate with local agencies and community; offer free events that provide healthy versions of cultural foods. PA and show case diversity through performances, song, words, dance, dress and traditions.
- Family Resource Center: We provide current resources, brochures and information regarding health and nutrition. This includes local resources, food banks, Farmers Markets, free/reduced school meals, events and other no cost/low cost services.
- Farmer’s Market – Kid’s Farmers Market in partnership with Center for Healthy Communities and the Oroville Food Bank
- Gardening Projects include: “Go organic”; Flowers and Veggie starters for families; Veggie share table; Life science projects; Service Learning
- Healthy Food Choices: Our Supper Meal Program provides daily nutrition to students. We collaborate with cafeteria staff to provide healthier snacks. We involve staff and students in planning, preparing and assessing nutritional content of food choices; showing simple ways to make snacks/meals healthier. We supplement snacks with available fresh local, organic foods. We exhibit healthy choices posters and use non-food rewards.
- Intramural and Team Sports: First Tee Golf, Volleyball, Soccer, Cross Country, Basketball, Flag Football, Track, Olympic Weight Lifting and other sports events.
- Multi-Cultural Nutrition and Health Projects include: our student-led Multi-Cultural Cooking Club; Nutrition and health education; Multi-Cultural Healthy Family Fun event where we support healthy school fun.
- Nutrition Education includes: How to read and understand food labels; Packaging and marketing; Benefits of water and 100% juice; Using food commodities creatively/nutritiously; Healthy choice meal/snack planning and support groups.
- Our Nutrition Curriculum: “Power of Choice”; Nourish; Food + Community; Nutrition Essentials; “Empower Youth with Nutrition and Physical Activity”; Dairy Council of CA—Exercise your Options”; “Do More, Watch Less” and materials from CANFIT. We also support the regular school day using “Harvest of the Month”.
- School/Community Partnerships: Our ASP staff is proud to participate in Community and School Events including Youth Dances, Talent Show, Portfolio Day, New Student Orientation, Back to School Night, Open House and Student Awards.
- Science and Health Faire: Our ASP Health Faire combined with School Science Faire boosts participation and learning.
- Service Learning Projects: “Recycle, Reduce, Reuse” project; after school garden club; School Green beautification project with custodial staff; CMS cultural wall art project and on-going planning for upcoming projects.
- Stay Fit Extreme: Daily appropriately challenging and innovative Physical Activity for all ability levels; Organized Team Sports, Recreation and Team Building; includes research based curricula and current Physical education standards.
